Amber

My husband and I met Amber the first day we moved to Texas. While exploring the town that would be our new home, we came across a weekly adoption event being hosted at the local pet supply store. Amber herself was still being socialized, and not yet ready for adoption - but we came back to the event every weekend to greet her and buy her treats. Three weeks later, after agreeing to continue her social training, we brought her home with us and completed our little family.

We would have three years together before my husband passed. Afterwards, I had a difficult time taking care of myself - but Amber would stay close to me during the worst of it, and helped me maintain a routine that took care of both of us. She could tell when we'd spent enough time hiding in bed, and start signaling for food or a walk to get me up and moving. She helped me find small joys each day and move forward with my life when I felt it was over. Our family was smaller, but still a family.

When Amber's X-Rays showed a tumor growing in her lung, it led to  conversations about  treatments I couldn't afford. It's a very specific kind of pain to learn there are ways to help your sick family member, but all you can afford to do is wait for the end.

I originally discovered this organization when researching ways to help Amber. Her oncologist recognized DogsLife, affirming they'd helped past patients in similar situations, and encouraged me to apply - and we got approved! This organization's support has allowed us to develop a real, actionable treatment plan for Amber. After helping me move forward during one of the hardest times in my life, now I can help Amber move forward during hers - and DogsLife is the reason we're able to move forward at all.
