Gideon

We got Gideon as a puppy in 2019. Our older dog, Lili, had separation anxiety, and we wanted to get her a friend to help. His presence helped her tremendously, and she no longer has separation anxiety when Gideon is with her. Shortly after bringing Gideon into our family, we found out we were expecting our first baby. We were nervous of how Gideon would react to the baby, because he was still just a puppy. He had a lot of energy, and we were worried he would be too rough with our son. Gideon surprised us all, and became the ultimate nanny dog. When we brought our son home from the hospital, he decided that was his baby. He was so gentle, and rarely left our son’s side. Fast forward 5 years, and they’re best friends. Wherever our son is, you can find Gideon right there with him. He calls Gideon “bubba”, because to him, that’s his brother.

We found Gideon’s mass in his mouth after we came home from our 1 year old being in ICU. We noticed Gideon’s breath smelled really bad, and went to clean his teeth when we saw the tumor. A few days later we saw his vet, who immediately scheduled a surgery to remove it. They sent the mass off for biopsy where it came back that it was cancerous. The biopsy also showed that they did not fully remove the tumor, so we scheduled with an oncologist. The oncologist is hopeful that after a second surgery, Gideon can be cancer free. Since he’s so young, we will have another 3-6+ years with him after this surgery.

We were concerned about surgery costs since my husband was laid off from his job, I’m only PRN at my job, and our 1 year old son has been in and out of the hospital. The oncologist told us about DogsLife, and we quickly applied for assistance.

This grant is a huge blessing, and gives us hope again. This year has been a dark year for our family, and it feels like we might finally be seeing the light again at the end of a long, dark tunnel. Gideon isn’t just a dog, he’s our family member, and we’re so grateful that we have a chance to save him.
