Sasha

Sasha is truly my miracle dog, and our story together has always felt uniquely meant to be. I rescued her as a puppy while I was in college, and not long after, she was stolen from my backyard and disappeared for several months. It was one of the most heartbreaking experiences of my life. Then, eight months later, I received a phone call that completely changed everything: Sasha had been found because of her microchip. Being reunited with her was genuinely one of the best days of my life. From that moment on, we became inseparable.

Since coming back home, Sasha has been my velcro dog in every sense of the word. I can't walk into another room without her following close behind or checking to make sure I'm still nearby. She has been my constant companion through every stage of life — every adventure, every milestone, every high and every low. We’ve traveled together, explored new places, and built a bond that goes far beyond what I could ever put into words. I truly believe part of my purpose in life is to care for her the same way she has always cared for me. Its impossible for me to imagine a single day that isn't centered around her happiness, comfort, and wellbeing.

When I first found out about Sasha's tumor, I went straight into denial. I think part of me refused to believe something could be seriously wrong with her. But eventually reality set in, and the weight of it all completely overwhelmed me. The thought of losing her was unbearable. Almost immediately, I shifted into “fight mode,” doing everything I could to find answers, explore treatment options, and give her the best possible chance. This entire process has been emotionally and mentally exhausting in ways I never could have prepared for. Anyone who has faced a serious diagnosis for a beloved pet knows how devastating it can be. At the same time, there is also the financial reality that comes with trying to save them. As treatment plans, diagnostics, scans, and surgery options were presented to me, I found myself trying to process terrifying possibilities while also figuring out how I could realistically afford the care she needed. The costs were overwhelming, and I felt completely torn between fear, hope, and uncertainty.

A coordinator recommended that I apply to Dogslife because of the incredible work they do helping pet owners in situations like mine. I honestly didn't know what to expect or whether we would qualify for assistance, but I knew I had to try. The application process itself was straightforward and compassionate, and it even introduced me to additional resources and avenues for support, such as CareCredit and fundraising opportunities, in case I needed them. After weeks of appointments, scans, treatments, and finally reaching the point of scheduling Sasha's surgery, I was beyond relieved and grateful to learn that we had been approved for the grant. It's difficult to fully express what that moment meant to me. The support from Dogslife lifted an enormous financial burden from my shoulders and allowed me to focus my energy where it truly belonged - on Sasha's treatment, recovery, and wellbeing instead of the constant fear of how I was going to manage everything financially. This grant changed so much for us. It gave me hope during one of the darkest and most stressful periods of my life, and it completely changed my perspective on organizations that dedicate themselves to helping people and pets in need.

Because of this support, I don't have to spend years drowning in debt over a surgery that could potentially give Sasha more time, more memories, and more life than we originally expected. No matter what the future holds, this grant has given us something priceless: more time together. More adventures, more travel, more quiet moments, more unconditional love, and more joy. For that, I will always be deeply grateful. I truly hope that one day I'll be in a position to give back and help someone else who finds themselves facing the same fear and uncertainty that I once did.
